INTERGENERATIONAL HOUSING

Intentional Neighboring design is one that facilitates neighbor interaction and builds healthier and more cohesive communities. We aim to provide opportunities that encourage interaction, understanding, and respect for residents of another generation. Most intergenerational programming only engages two generations, while this community will engage three generations and they can all mutually benefit from involvement in the community. Through the encouragement of social connectedness among the different generations, all residents have opportunities to experience improved well-being and quality of life.

Single-parent households and seniors residing at Van Buren Flats will have expressed an interest in the application process to be actively involved in an intergenerational community. Each resident will be an integral and valued member of the community. They will live harmoniously in this intergenerational development knowing that every one of their neighbors' lives are enriched because of their on-going service to their community. 

A Tenant Council will empower individual residents to engage with others in the community and facilitate activities that will promote social enrichment and interpersonal connections.

Dynamic programming such as senior-hosted story-time for children of the development, arts and crafts classes, and Holiday events and programs inclusive of all intergenerational residents are pathways towards the community we are building.
